Basics On House Training A Puppy
You have just brought home a new puppy. You have anticipated this day for a while now, and you have envisioned how happy both of you are in each other's company. One of the first things that you need to do is house train him. This will take a lot of patience and commitment from you. The important thing that you have to remember is to be consistent.
First of all, accept the fact that your puppy will have accidents in your house. This is inevitable during its house training, and there is no use getting frustrated with your puppy when that happens. Just have in mind an approach to clean the soiled area effectively.
Your puppy does best when he is on a routine. Have scheduled times when he can go outside for a bathroom break. Do this at least every two hours. When you are outside, select a spot where your puppy should go and lead him there on a leash. If he accepts the spot and starts to eliminate, use a simple phrase like "go potty". You are helping him anticipate a bathroom break when you give him this verbal cue.
Whenever your puppy does the right thing by going outside, reward him. Give him praise and a treat immediately after he is done. Do not wait to offer the reward because your puppy needs to associate his reward with going to the bathroom outside.
Feed your puppy at the same time every day. When he has a regular schedule in eating, he will have a more or less regular schedule in needing to go to the bathroom. This is helpful to you in predicting when he needs to go and will make houstraining him easier.
Your puppy is still learning how to control his bladder. At night, it is a good idea to remove the water dish because if a puppy drinks a lot at night, he will undoubtedly need to go. Your puppy may be giving you signals when he needs to go outside, like scratching on the door. When you see this, put a leash on him and take him to his his bathroom spot right away.
Supervise your puppy closely. House training will not happen overnight. Give him lots of positive reinforcement when he goes in the right spot. If you are consistent with this, your puppy will be house trained in no time.
